History and the School Today

St. James' Primary School was opened in 1865 in Great Norwood Street.  It was, in fact, "three schools in one" - a boys' school, a girls' school and an infants' school, all in one building.  The teaching was restricted to the "3 Rs" and Scripture; the children would have had to learn the catechism, the chapters of the Bible and would have had to pass the annual examination.

Today, children at St. James' enjoy a broad and very full curriculum designed to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum.

The present school caters for approximately 305 pupils from to 11 years old. The classrooms and work areas are well equipped and the staff are dedicated, enthusiastic and highly experienced.  St. James' has a happy, family atmosphere and high standards are expected both in terms of work and behaviour.

The school is a Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School.  As a voluntary controlled school it owes its origin to the Church, although since the 1944 Education Act it is the Local Education Authority that has been responsible for meeting the costs of upkeep, repairs and conduct of the school.  It also organises admission to the school.  Membership of the Church of England is not a criterion for admission.  The school's voluntary status is reflected in the composition of the Governing Body which has foundation Governors appointed in consultation with the P.C.C. of the Church of St. Philip and St. James.  The school also enjoys close links with the Diocese.

The building is situated in the Park area of Cheltenham on a site occupied by three other schools including Cheltenham Bournside Comprehensive and Sixth Form Centre to which most of the children transfer at 11 years old.

The children are arranged in eleven classes.  The modern building contains ten permanent classrooms and one Elliott classroom, two large activity areas, hall, kitchen, toilets and cloakrooms.

Adjoining the school are two large playing fields and one large surfaced playground to the rear and a smaller one to the front. A 'quiet' area has also been established.

The school is well equipped and resources are constantly being replaced, updated and improved.
